Sunday Social

1. What is your dream job?
Actually, weird as it is, teaching has always been my dream job.... It's not all sunshine and daisies, but I still love it!

2. If you had just won the lottery and didn’t need to work for money, what would you do with your time?
That's a good question. I'd love to be a stay at home mom for awhile... But I don't know if I have the patience for it. I love my little girl, but all day every day with her? I don't know about that one. I'd probably need some type of part time job just to keep my sanity... Does that make me a bad mom?

3. What piece of career advice would you give to someone just starting out in your field?
Patience. And don't try to do it all at once. Every school year I try to change a million things about my classroom and teaching... And them I get overwhelmed and exhausted. Don't try to do it all, make a couple of changes at a time and go from there.

4. What would be your ideal “just for fun” job?
Is there such a thing? Isn't a job by definition not "just for fun"? I guess if I was looking for my ideal just fun job, I'd go with blogging... I mean I'd have to do a lot of work to make any significant money off it, but it's already something I love doing.

5. What was your first “real” job?
I'm assuming scooping ice cream for a summer at Ben & Jerry's doesn't count as a real job... By after that I was a summer camp counselor for a few years, a substitute teacher during college breaks and finally got my first real job teaching.

Happy (Finally) Friday!

Yesterday was a looooooooooooooong day, I'm wiped. A field trip on top of open house on top of coming down with some kind of bug... I'm exhausted. I had originally planned on just pushing through it today at work, but then I went to bed at 8:30 last night and spent 2 hours shaking with chills before my fever returned with a vengeance and I felt like I was boiling alive. No bueno... so I'm home today being a bun and probably sleeping all day long to beat this thing. The part that's stressing me out? I just checked at 7:30, and I still don't have a sub for my classroom... eek!

Thursday Thoughts

This week is flying by... but I have a feeling today will be long. I'm taking my kids on a field trip today AND it's open house tonight...fun. fun. Here's what's been on my mind this week:

  • I need to do some other type of workout besides running, but I'm not sure what to do. I don't have the time or money to head to the gym, so I need workouts I can do at home with minimal/no equipment. Suggestions? I do have my Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD, which I haven't done for awhile, and her Yoga Meltdown DVD is around somewhere... I think... but neither of them is really sounding all that great.
  • The other day I saw on tv that this season is the last one of How I Met Your Mother... which made me super depressed, I love that show! So of course, I'm now watching all the seasons on Netflix, and I'm loving it even more. I forgot about some of the hilarious episodes and randomness. I'm going to be so sad when this show is gone!
  • I'm also really excited that so many shows are starting this week and the next couple of weeks. Right now I'm looking forward to the return of Revenge, HIMYM, 2 Broke Girls, The Vampire Diaries, New Girl, Revolution, Big Bang Theory, Nashville, and Modern Family. I'm also looking forward to new shows like The Crazy Ones, Hostages, The Originals, and Mom... crap, I really watch a lot of TV, don't I? Are there any new or returning shows that are must sees? I might be able to clear some room on the DVR for a few new shows.
  • So my lame 17-year old brother asked me how far I run these days. I told him that I run 3-4 miles three times a week. He goes "is that it?". Ouch. I was damn proud of my running. Apparently that's nothing? In 10 years I'd like to see what he's doing for exercise.
  • I love going through my iPhone pix and discovering little gems I had forgotten I had taken, like this one:

So What Wednesday

I hate typing the word "Wednesday" because every time I do it, I think to myself "wed-nes-day" because otherwise I'll spell it wrong.

I digress.

It's Wednesday, so this week I'm saying "So What" if

  • I laugh in the morning when Fynn throws hissy fits about having to put on socks/shoes/pants/sweaters.... basically every item of clothing.
  • On Saturday Drew and I took turns going into Dunkin Donuts because we had two coupons to use and Fynn strapped into the carseat. The things we'll do to save a couple of bucks.
  • The other night I went into the breezeway to shut down for the night and I saw a big, nasty-looking bug scurry under a box...so I turned off the light and headed up to bed.
  • I check my grad school grades every.single.day. I currently have a perfect score on all my assignments. I feel like I have to check every day to make sure that continues.
  • I slipped a little (maybe a lot) and I'm drinking Diet Pepsi again after swearing it off....ugh, I'm so weak! I'm not drinking it as much as I was, but still having a glass 4-5 times a week. I'm so ashamed.

TBD: The Best Breastfeeding Resources

I'm calling this the best breastfeeding resource, but I have to add the disclaimer that it's the best breastfeeding resources that I've found. There may be other books/sites/people out there for all things breastfeeding, but this has been my go-to resource since Fynn was born:
Kellymom.com has a little of everything. Advice for pregnancy, establishing breastfeeding, pumping... it's got it all. I've visited this site so many times that I type in www.k and it comes up in my browser automatically whether I'm on the laptop, iPad, or my phone.

I love this site for a couple of reasons. 1) It's evidence-based and researched. Therefore I know their advice and suggestions are credible and reliable. 2) It's succulent. When you're looking for the answer to a question you want it fast. Not to read 5 pages of info before you finally get what they're saying. 3) It's very well organized. You can find information about all ages, stages, and facets of breastfeeding on here with easy to navigate tabs. 4) It answers every single breastfeeding question I've had over the last 14 months. Every single one. Even the random, odd questions that pop into my head, Kellymom has an answer.

*I was not endorsed or compensated for this post, this is just me sharing a site I love and have used religiously for months*

5 Fun Adventure Sports to Try With Your Kids

*This post was brought to you by Abby Evans

Whether it is camping, day hiking, bike riding, swimming or you name it, kids usually love getting outdoors. Here are some of the top outdoorsy adventures that will make awesome memories for your family.

1. River Rafting or Tubing
White water rafting can be an exhilarating adventure for families. Rafting down a river with the occasional exciting rapid can be a great way to see beautiful locations and enjoy time together as a family. River rafting trips can be as long as an afternoon, full day or even multiple days. Though children should be a little bit older, many rafting guides and companies only take age 5 and up, this is a great sport to try as a family.

2. Surfing
If your next vacation takes you to the coast, you should definitely sign up your whole family for a surfing lesson. Surfing is a fun sport that gets kids in the ocean. Many surf schools offer beginning lessons that include the rental of wet suits and foam long boards. You can set up a private instruction session for your family or meet new friends who are also beginners. After the lesson, your family will hopefully have a brand new ocean hobby to enjoy together.

3. Skiing and Snowboarding
Now for another water based sport—frozen water that is. Skiing and snowboarding are both excellent opportunities for kids and adults to try together. Plan a vacation to a local mountain resort or get away to the slopes in Colorado, Utah or Mammoth, California. You can rent equipment and hire an instructor. But if you have previous skiing experience, this might be an awesome time to show your kids what you know and teach them yourself. Taking the family on a ski trip might just turn into an annual tradition.

4. Rock Climbing
Another great adventure to take your kids on is rock climbing. Whether you find a local gym or travel to a good bouldering site, rock climbing is a fun hobby that teaches lessons of trust and working together. Kids can learn about belaying each other and practicing good communication as one climbs and the other assists from the ground as an anchor. And once they’ve gotten the hang of it, there are many locations that your family can journey to in search of more rocks to climb.

5. Paintball
The final sport in the countdown is paintball. Yes, families can play paintball, too. Although it may sound like a sport crazy teens and young adults, paintballing can actually be a fun teambuilding game for families. Playing paintball requires helping your teammates to work towards a common target. Find a paintball center near you and find out about taking kids to play there. Perhaps, you can even host a family reunion at a paintball range.

With Patagonia accessories and an enthusiasm for adventure, there are many extreme sports that your family can enjoy experiencing together while gaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Holy Crap Batman... Why I hate social media when it comes to blogging.

When I started my blog three years ago, blogging was just that. Blogging. There was none of this PR crap. No twitter feeds to fill, promotions to do, extravagant giveaways and 5 bajillion ways to follow.

It was about the blog. You followed people because you loved them and/or what they had to say. Now it's this whole business of self-promoting, brand promotion, and trying to get ahead.

It's exhausting... and I don't even do that much of it!

I'm dedicated to the blog, this is my baby and really, it's my place. If all of you lovely readers left tomorrow, I'd be okay and I'd still keep writing. Don't get me wrong, I love all of you. Your comments are amazing, the relationships that have grown out of this little piece of the web are true and valuable... but dude? I write for me.

Where did this come from? So glad you asked. Last week I got an e-mail that included a link to this: A Free Checklist for Growing Your Blog as a Business. You don't have to go read it, basically it just says I need to be tweeting about 10 times a day, following 10 new people on Twitter a day, posting on Facebook a couple of times a day, pinning a picture from every post... oh yeah, and blogging every day.

Seriously? This would have to be my full time job in order to accomplish all this on a daily basis. Not to mention it would be annoying and tedious.

Actually, I hate social media when it comes to blogging. Yeah, I have a Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Pinterest, and Bloglovin' accounts for the blog (and you're more than welcome to follow them) but I will not be blowing up your feeds. I tweet every now and then, Facebook occasionally  update on G+... once? Maybe. And only pin to Pinterest other people's stuff that I love, not my own blog. Does this make me a bad blogger? Maybe. I'm not doing all the things I'm "supposed" to do to grow my blog. But I'm cool with that. For a couple of different reasons.

1) I don't want to read the millions of updates other bloggers post/tweet/update all day long. Thus, I'm not going to bore you with mine. Seems fair to me.

2) I just don't have time. Remember that whole baby, full-time job, grad school, husband, oh and sleep. That shizz is important. The blog comes after all of that. And by the blog I mean writing a blog. Actually just writing.

3) I figure if you want to read, you would. If you're following me on any of those sites, then you already know me. Why do I need to yell at you all day?

4) There's no 4. It just seemed lame to have a list with only three things on it.

So, because of all that, I'm just not feeding into it. Go ahead and follow however you like (or don't) just don't expect to hear from me 10 times a day. Not. Gonna. Happen. This space here? It will be updated almost every day though.

Win The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition

Disclosure: I received a copy of the movie in exchange for this post which made my day. No other compensation was received (nor was it needed because I love this movie!)

I'm not going to bore you with how The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney movie ever (though it seriously is). I will however bless you with a lovely picture of myself, as a kid, showing off my first copy of the movie. That's right, good old VHS... which I'm pretty sure my mom still has. Whether it's still watchable is debatable since I must have watched it 4 thousand times over the years.
I know, awful picture. But it's a Polaroid. From the 90's.
But if you look close you can see my sweet bangs, princess party hat and classic edition of The Little Mermaid

Nope, instead of boring you with that, I'm just going to give you a chance to win your very own The Little Mermaid Diamond Edition Blu Ray + DVD combo pack. Because honestly? Most of you probably aren't even reading this. Most of you scrolled right past my carefully crafted words to get right to the entry form. Can I blame you? Not in the least, I'd probably do the same. However, you do have to know the rules, so here they are:

This giveaway is open to U.S. and Canada residents ages 18+. The odds of winning are totally dependent on the number of valid entries received. This giveaway is in no way affiliated with any Social Network (Facebook, Twitter, etc) and I (Amanda) and not responsible for anything that happens after a winner is chosen. The prize and shipping of the prize are the responsibility of the sponsors of this giveaway. Winner will be notified via e-mail within 24 hours of giveaway ending and has 24 hours to respond before a new winner is chosen. Still work for you? Sweet. Enter away!

So What Wednesday

What day is it?

That's right, it's "So What Wednesday", so I'm saying So What if:

  • I can't wait to get parent volunteers into my classroom... mostly because I hate photocopying and every year there's someone who's willing to do for me. I love those parents!
  • I'm loving grad school... yeah, I'm a geek. My classwork keeps me super busy and sometimes overwhelmed by trying to balance it with work, and Fynn... but I love learning new thinks and discussing ideas with others.... man I'm a dork
  • Three days later and I'm still on a runner's high from Sunday's race. I'm running more and more this week just to get that feeling back!
  • I have a sweet giveaway going live at 6 am tomorrow and I am over the moon excited about it (quick hint, it involves classic Disney and my childhood). You should probably come back and check it out
  • I showed my class the Hump Day commercial because half my kids were quoting it all the time (okay, okay, I may have too) and the other half had never seen it. What kind of DVR rock are these kids living under?!?
  • Drew just referred to the skin scrapings from his PedEgg* as "foot cocaine"... I'm gagging here
  • My kid loves to ride on the vacuum. Any time it comes out she follows it around and climbs on. Hilarious? Yes. Weird? Of course, but it's not the weirdest thing she does... which should probably worry me.

*Sorry to out you as a foot-filer Drew, but seriously, you should say stuff like that while I'm blogging. It's just asking for trouble... just like making awful faces when I tell you I'm taking a picture for the blog.

Running Running, and Running Running

I ran my first 5K yesterday!!!
Right after an amazing run...
looking like a fool, but feeling great!

After diligently doing the Couch 2 5K program through week 6, I had to kind of fudge the last two weeks because I was a week away from running an actual 5K. I skipped ahead in the program to week 8, and then just focused on running 5K consistently. Shockingly... it wasn't that hard. All the previous training had gotten me ready for the real thing. So much so that skipping the last two weeks worked out.

Personal best before the race

The freaky thing? By building up and getting ready to run the race, I actually started enjoying running. I had my best run last Monday, where I ran 5 K in 35 minutes, 37 seconds... and after I finished, I wanted to keep running... yeah, it kinda of freaked me out to enjoy it that much.

Dear Drew,
Try to mess with my pix?
End up on the blog.
Love, Your wife

Going into the race, I didn't have any expectations. I just wanted to finish without walking at all. I wasn't worried about my time. I wasn't worried about being a superstar. I just wanted to finish and feel good about myself. When we checked in, my slip said that I was 28, and Drew was 26... no bueno! I went right over and fixed that. I may be older, but by 12 days, not two whole years!

Right before the race the two women who started the race in honor of their brother who passed away on 9/11 talked about using this race to make something good come out of that day... I almost cried. It's amazing how they took their personal tragedy and turned it into a scholarship to help a kid go to college.

Then it was announced to everyone that it was Drew's birthday. He was mortified... I loved it. The start line was chaotic, 300 people trying to start at the exact same time. Including a high school girl right in front of me who was running with a stroller...a stroller with a cat inside. Yeah, it kind of made my day.

Ready to go!
I started out strong... a little too strong. I finished the first km in 5:37... I usually average 7-8 minutes per kilometer. I knew it was too fast for me, but I got all caught up in the race-day adrenaline. I ended up slowing down a lot around 3.5 km, but really kicked it in gear at the end. My final time? 33:40. Two full minutes better than my personal best! To say I was proud of myself was the understatement of the year. I was beside myself. I didn't walk at all, AND I beat my personal best time. Right after I crossed the finish line, I thought I was either going to puke or pass out, but after a bottle of water and walking around for a bit I felt fine. Even better was that all the runners got free massages. You can bet I got right in line for that and enjoyed every second of it.

Much better pre-race picture
Now my only question is, when's the next race? That's right, I'm hooked, and I can't wait to do it again. I remember not that long ago, seeing other bloggers/friends who were doing 5k's and I kept thinking how amazing they are and how I could never do that. Obviously their still amazing, but I'm blown away by the fact that I was able to push myself, train, and run my first 5K. I plan on doing more, and Drew and I have even talked about doing a 10K next year... we'll see about that. It sounds awesome... but I'm just wrapping by head around 5K, I'm not quite ready to double that!

Sunday Social

It's race day! Today Drew and I are running our first every 5k. Together. Awww. It's also Drew 27th birthday, which means he can finally stop reminding me that I'm older then him (by 12 whole days!) As this is being posted Drew and I are getting ready for the race and Fynn is getting ready to hang out with her grandparents so Mommy and Daddy can run together. If I survive this ordeal, I'll be back to let you know how it went!

Anyway, on to the Sunday Social:

1. What is the name if your blog?
Look up. Over this post. Yeah, this is My Show. Named because I like to think I'm interesting enough to warrant my own reality show. Only mine's via a blog rather than tv.

2. What do you love most about blogging?
I say this all the time, but it's the people. The amazing ladies I've met through blogging. It's crazy how I've never met these people, but I know them better then friends I've had for years. I love the fact that I've gotten to know people through blogging that I otherwise would never have met.

3. Why did you start blogging?

What Mom, I'm not supposed
to eat the grapes right out of the
grocery bag?
Partially I was bored, looking for an outlet, but a bigger part loved reading blogs and wanted that kind of record of my life, especially since we were looking to start our family soon. I wanted to start a blog to document every moment of pregnancy, becoming a mom and those fun family moment that go by way too fast.

4. What is something you’d want to tell someone just starting out in the blog world?

Just enjoy it. Write for yourself. It seems like everyone gets all caught up in growing their blog... and then they lose themselves. Focus on your writing, interacting with your readers and getting to know other bloggers. If those things are going well, your blog will grow.
5. Biggest blogging learning experience you’ve had?

I always try to do a million things on the blog at once and it always ends up biting me in the behind. I tried starting my own link-up... yeah, that was a fail. I just didn't know what I was doing.

6. What are three blogs you love?

Ramblings of a Suburban Mom

Baby Bound

Loves of Life

September Ipsy Bag

I was psyched to see my Ipsy bag in the mail yesterday. I just got the shipping notice Thursday, so I wasn't expecting to get it for another week... since that's usually how Ipsy has been for me.

I love this month's bag. It's so pretty and something I will use a whole bunch. I love getting these bags every month. Even if I don't love all the make up, I use the bags all the time.

Starlooks Eyeliner in Obsdian Kohl- ($12)

I don't use eyeliner a ton, but this is the perfect shade for when I do, so I'm happy with it. I love their pencils. I got a lip pencil in ipsy a few months ago and loved how smoothly it goes on and how long it lasts.

Cailyn Tinted Lip Balm in Big Apple- ($19)
Um... yeah this is more of a lipstick than a "tinted lip balm". Not that I really know what the difference is, but when I think of a tinted lip balm I think of subtle color... this is so not subtle. It's dark. And a really bright color too. I actually like how it looks on me, but I can't see wearing it very often... not really my style. I do love how cute the bottles (jars?) of these are. They're super cute and fun. I love their brushes too, and the fact that the tube becomes a stand for the brush so it can dry standing up.

Freemen Beauty Facial Paper Mask- ($1.99 x 3)     I love face masks, they're just a lot of fun and I love how my skin feels afterwards. I love that I got three different types to try out. I've tried the brand before, but it's been awhile and I don't remember anything about them, so I'm excited about these.

NYX Single Eye Shadow in Charcoal - ($4.50)
I love this eye shadow. Just the right amount of shimmer without being high school prom-esq. It's the perfect shade for a smoky eye look.

Elizabeth Mott It's So Big Volumizing Mascara- ($19.99)
I said it last month; I love, love, love mascara so was really happy to see another one in my bag. I love the brush for this and I can't wait to test it out.

Overall this month's glam bag was worth a whopping $61.46 not including the bag... which is kind of my favorite part. Not a bad deal when you consider I paid $10 for it. I love a good deal, and I love getting new make up to try that I probably wouldn't have bought on my own.
