Winter Running in Maine

It's been three weeks since I've run outside, and a lot has changed on the roads around here since then. We've gotten about 2 feet of snow here already, and it's been bitterly cold.

I took advantage of a low-key Saturday afternoon to get in a good run outside. It was actually above freezing temperatures, so I was excited to run while it was warm... until I discovered that running outside during a Maine winter is more of a cross-training exercise than actual running. My run Saturday consisted of jumping over puddles, side-stepping ice chunks and piles of snow, balancing on black ice, dodging the icy spray from cars passing by and enduring icy winds that cut through your sweaty clothes... actually, running outside in December around here  is more like an immunity challenge on Survivor: The Tundra than an actual run.

That said, it was awesome. Yeah, my pants were soaked from the icy water splashing up with each step, and my sneakers will take a couple of days to dry, but considering how little I've been running lately, I was proud of myself for doing 5.25 km in 37 minutes. I felt good after running. My hip was starting to hurt a little, so it was a good time for me to stop before I really hurt myself.

  1. I'm glad you got your run in and didn't hurt yourself. It seems you are used to your winters. I can't even imagine myself walking in such cold, much less to run. But one can get used to many things right:)

    Merry Christmas!
