Planting a garden with a toddler

Awhile ago, Drew brought up the idea of starting a garden this summer. To be honest, I wasn't exactly thrilled. It sounded like a lot of work, headaches, and yeah... manual labor (so not my thing).

Then he pulled the "but Fynn will love it"

Obviously it had to be done. Last weekend we went and bought seeds and a few planters and Drew spent an afternoon roto-tilling a plot to plant. He and I spent the remainder of nap time raking out the grass and smoothing out the soil. Fynn woke up just in time to start planting.

The first couple of rows seeds went everywhere, but Fynn quickly figured out how to put the seeds into the holes that Drew had made for us and really enjoyed looking at the seeds as we talked about what would grow. We haven't yet planted the seedlings in the garden plot, so they're on the back deck for the time being. Fynn loves going out and looking at them and watering them with her little watering can.

She doesn't quite get the whole "be gentle" concept. She picks off some of the leaves of the seedlings and doesn't get walking between the rows. However, I think she's going to have a lot of fun watching things grow and working out in the garden.

Now the question is, will we actually grow anything?

  1. This is so cute, I would be horrible at this. I kill every plant. I have no idea how stuff is blooming in my yard because I haven't touched it (that's probably why). I hope something grows!

  2. I remember doing this for science class in middle school. It was so much fun!
